What is a debit card?

It’s a bank card that lets you easily access money in your checking account. Use it instead of cash or checks for everyday purchases, such as gas and groceries. You can also use it to pay bills and make online purchases.

How does a debit card work?

When you use a debit card, the money is taken out of your checking account immediately. You must have enough money in your account to pay for the purchase. There is no credit or bill to be paid later. If you’re paying in person, swipe, insert or tap your card at checkout. You may be asked for your PIN or signature. For online and phone purchases and transactions, provide your card number, expiration date and CVV code. If you don’t have your card handy, you can access your card information via virtual card. You may also use your debit card as an ATM card. Just insert your card and enter your PIN.

What is the CVV?

The CVV (card verification value) on a debit card is the three-digit number found on the back of the card. It provides additional safety and security for your account and reduces fraudulent use.

How old do I have to be to have a U.S. Bank Visa Debit Card?

You need a U.S. Bank checking account to have a U.S. Bank Visa ® Debit Card. If you’re 18 or older, you may open an account online or at a branch. If you’re 13 through 17, you may open a joint account with an adult.

Does U.S. Bank offer debit cards to businesses?

Yes. A business debit card lets you make purchases directly from your U.S. Bank business checking account anywhere Visa is accepted in person, online or over the phone.

How can I protect myself from overdrafts due to transactions made with my debit card?

You can opt into ATM and Debit Card Overdraft Coverage. If you say ‘yes’ to this coverage, U.S. Bank may pay ATM and everyday debit card transactions that would result in a negative available balance in your account and cause a fee. If you say ‘no’, these transactions will be declined, and you won’t be charged an Overdraft Paid Fee. Overdraft coverage does not apply to the Safe Debit account.

Can I earn rewards with my U.S. Bank Visa Debit Card?

Yes. If you have an eligible card, you’re automatically enrolled and will receive cash-back deals when available. Cash-back deals are personalized to you and are deposited directly into your checking account.

What do I do if I lose my debit card?

Close and replace your card on the mobile app, online or by calling us. We’ll deactivate it and send you a new one. You’ll also have the option to just lock your card, so you have time to look for it.
